Invasive Species Council asks for your support – Roam Cats

Roaming pet cats are sending our suburbs silent

This is the moment we’ve been waiting for.

Right now, outdated NSW laws are failing our wildlife. Roaming pet cats are killing a staggering 66 million native mammals, birds and reptiles in Sydney alone each year!

Despite this, NSW councils are banned from introducing cat containment rules. It’s sending our suburbs silent!

But there’s good news. In response to our pressure, both behind the scenes and in the media, the NSW government has announced it will review the Companion Animals Act – for the first time in 2 decades.

This is our chance to fix these archaic laws. You and I must show there’s overwhelming public support for cat containment before submissions close. We’ve made it quick and easy to do.

Roaming pet cats are sending our suburbs silent.

But there is a solution. Keeping pet cats safely contained is not only better for wildlife, it’s better for cats too. Contained cats live up to 10 years longer, avoiding car accidents, dog attacks, disease and costly vet bills. They are healthier, happier and safer, while our native birds and lizards get the protection they desperately need.

Other states have already taken action. In Victoria, over half of councils have introduced cat containment rules. The ACT has adopted 24/7 containment laws territory-wide.

It’s time for NSW to follow. This review is our chance to finally give councils the tools they need to protect both cats and native wildlife.

We need at least 10,000 submissions to ensure our voices are impossible for the government to ignore.

It only takes a few minutes to have your say, and we’ve made it easy for you to submit.

We fought to secure this review and now we need to make it count. For the sake of our sugar gliders, blue-tongue lizards, and backyard birds, take action today.

With gratitude,
Jack Gough — Interim CEO and Advocacy Director
P.S. This review is happening because of people like you who spoke up for wildlife. Now, let’s make sure it leads to real change. Make your submission and show the NSW government that cat containment is supported in NSW.
